AI and Power BI

An AI agent can now read and modify a semantic model and a report while Power BI Desktop is open. It connects through the Power BI Modeling MCP server, a local component published by Microsoft that behaves like an external tool of Power BI Desktop.

This section collects information to support the use of AI tools to create models and reports with Power BI.

Setup instructions for AI tools

  • AI tools for Power BI Desktop — the ten clients that connect to Power BI Desktop, a comparison to choose one, and a self-contained setup guide for each of them.

Video Courses

These video courses can help in understanding and applying AI in Power BI.

  • AI for Power BI: Intro — where an agent helps and where it does not, the tools involved, and how to set up a first safe experiment on a model of yours.
  • DAX with AI: Essentials — write, read, and review DAX with an agent: the prompts that work, the ones that do not, and how to verify what the agent produced.
  • DAX with AI: Scenarios — complete scenarios on real models: bulk operations, refactoring, optimization, and the reviews that keep the result correct.
